Mattress Shopping Tips

Buying a mattress is an investment in your sleep and your health. Here are a few tips to help you make an educated in-store purchase.

  • 1Wear comfortable clothes
  • Wear comfortable clothes and budget enough time to make a proper decision. A mattress is a long-term investment - you don't want to hurry and make a rash decision.
  • 2Test out the mattress in all your sleeping positions
  • Buying a mattress is a long-term commitment, so don't hesitate to lay down on the mattress in all the different sleeping positions that you are accustomed to. If you're with your partner, be sure to try the mattress at the same time. After all, that's how you will be sleeping on it. Be sure to test various mattresses, as the feel and support levels differ from one to another. Take your time and ask the sales associate to give you a minute if need be.
  • 3Be sure to buy the right mattress size
  • Sleep studies show that we turn between 40-60 times a night. To ensure a quality night's sleep, make sure the bed is wide enough to fit both you and your partner comfortably, allowing room to move freely, so that you don't wake each other. If you are sleeping with a partner, we recommend that you don't settle for anything smaller than a Queen or a King size mattress. To see the difference in sizes, please see the Mattress Sizes page.
  • 4Be wary of the mattress comfort myth
  • It's a myth that a mattress needs to be hard to be good for you. Kingsdown mattresses are built with the latest cushioning materials, offering a variety of comfort levels from soft to firm without being hard. You can rest assured that every Kingsdown mattress will provide you with the necessary support to alleviate pressure points. Just remember that more coils equals more support. If support is what you're looking for, be sure to buy a mattress with a high coil count.
  • 5What to purchase
  • If your bed requires a foundation, be sure to always buy it as a set. Placing a new mattress on an old foundation will interfere with the comfort and support of that mattress. It can also reduce the useful life of the mattress. Another thing to remember is that Kingsdown mattresses are built quite high. Based on the height of your mattress, you may want to ask the sales person to recommend an appropriate foundation for your mattress. Kingsdown offers low profile foundations that offer the same level of support for your mattress, but lowers the height at which your mattress will sit.
